Hyperbolic Paraboloid Roof – a continuously loaded, double curved, self-supporting structure.

The Structure was built in 1959 and designed by British Architect Samuel Scorer. It sits on the sound bound carriage way of the A1 at a place called Markham Moor, near Retford. Originally conceived as petrol station, thirty years later the original shell roof was built under and now occupies a Little Chef restaurant. Scorer could be described as a pioneer in the field of Hyperbolic Paraboloid structures, sited by many of his peers as ‘a figure of national importance’ yet despite this, it’s hard to find much reference of his work anywhere, he remains relatively unknown.

Jake explains the design and development process of the new site he built for Sam Williams:

The project began with three important words from Sam; keep it simple.

Sam’s a close friend, and despite him being a designer, he’d consistently said throughout the design process, ‘just do what you think is best’. This clearly went to my head, and the first couple of revisions were too bloated or not clear enough, for example, each category had an ASCII character as an icon in many of the revisions, before I realised this was superfluous. Sam has a habit of giving feedback in one word, such as ‘nice’, or ‘good’, and from that it’s sometimes tough to deduce if nice means nice or good means good.

The final production design was essentially the previous revision of the design with ten times less bloat. Sometimes it’s too easy to use things like jQuery’s animate functions everywhere without noticing, and removing them simplified things a lot. Sorting by category was integral to the site, and the idea to sort by year or alphabetically by column seemed a relatively unique and effective solution, this was chosen towards the end of the project, removing the previous ‘click to hide category’ style of sorting.

CSS3 columns don’t seem to have revolutionised the web the way I thought they would – I was keen to use them, and they degrade gracefully to a reasonable column width in unsupported browsers.

The one element that stayed in the final design that differs from the otherwise basic layout styling was the hover states on the rows; they’re random colours from a chosen palette of ten colours. Originally Sam was convinced he wanted different shades of grey, but I twisted his arm, and I think they’re integral to the success of the design.

Sam’s site was great fun to design, and it resulted in a solution I’m particularly happy with.

It is inspired by the works of Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton, Étienne-Jules Marey as well as similarly inspired modernist cubist works such as Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase No.2″. Rather than focusing on observable trajectories, it explores techniques of extrapolation to sculpt abstract forms, visualizing unseen relationships – power, balance, grace and conflict – between the body and its surroundings.
